Saperavi

McGregor Vineyard began producing its first Saperavi in 1985. Saperavi is an ancient wine grape originally from the country of Georgia. This estate grown and produced Saperavi was aged in oak barrels for one year. It has intense aromas and flavors of black currants and blackberries along with hints of earth, spice, and oak. While enjoyable in its youth, this wine will age nicely for many years.

This wine takes a hold of your palate and doesn’t let go. Aromas of plum, black currant, and blackberry rise out of the glass along with a subtle dust/dried leaves/forest floor character. Flavors include tart cherry, blueberry, elderberry, smoke, moss, and earth - and more and more.

This thick and opaque wine has a deep ruby color and very complex aromas and flavors; it’s a smooth wine with attitude. The aromas are reminiscent of spice, bourbon barrels, oak, and black and blue fruits (super ripe plums and blueberries) along with an underlying woodsy, mossy, and fresh soil character. It’s a big, broad, and spacious wine with a peppery character along with flavors of sweet oak, toasted coconut, spice, black currant and a touch of serrano pepper, tobacco and smoke. The finish is smooth and lingering.

The wine is palate-filling, very rich, and smooth with well developed tannins. It has tart fruit flavors without any bite- cranberry, elderberry, and black currants. These expansive aromatics are joined with suggestions of pepper, fresh flowers, lightly toasted marshmallow, and ripe elderberries. Silky tannins coat the palate and lend to a very pleasant, long finish.

This is a “classic” vintage of Black Russian Red. Saperavi is the primary grape of this wine and it is blended with a touch of the Moldovan grape, Sereksiya Charni. Aromas of black currant, black berry, sweet oak, spice and smoke follow through beautifully on the palate. There are some nice plum and coconut flavors blended in as well. Silky tannins coat the palate and lend to a very pleasant, long finish.

The wine is quite aromatic and reminds me of ripe elderberries, black currants, blackberries, coconut and freshly split white oak. These characteristics follow through on the palate beautifully. The wine is rich and soft and ripe tannins grip (not bite) the palate and lead to a long, long finish.

This vintage of Black Russian Red has an enticing deep red-purple color backed up with aromas reminiscent of black currants, elderberry, ripe plum, and ripe red raspberries. This medium bodied wine combines all these aromas on the palate with tart cherries, mellow oak character and rich, silky tannins all leading to a nice, long and contemplative finish.
